Micro-needling is a great treatment option for those experiencing hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and clogged pores. Micro-needling treatments essentially aims to speed the body’s wound healing process, in order to encourage a quick cell turnover to reveal fresh, brighter and firmer skin.
Benefits of Micro-needling
There are many benefits to micro-needling, the biggest one being the ability to encourage the production of collagen. Collagen is the secret to youthful skin, as it is responsible for maintaining elasticity and hydration. Micro-needling triggers the creation of new cells through your body’s natural healing processes, making the results authentic and long-lasting. In addition, micro-needling gets rid of layers of dead skin, allowing your skincare products to penetrate the skin more deeply, making them more effective.

At your Appointment
A micro-needling treatment can last anywhere from 30 – 60 minutes. Your dermatologist or esthetician will puncture the targeted areas with small needles, creating microscopic facial injuries. These punctures, also called “empty spaces,” are a reduction of tissue and trigger the area to create collagen and elastin. It is important to note that the length of the needle will determine the extent of treatment. Needle sizes that range from 0.1 mm – 3mm, with the former penetrating the first layer of skin and the latter deeper for scars and stretch marks. A deep micro-needling treatment will require a longer needle and is administered with a numbing cream to limit client discomfort.
After a micro-needling treatment, your skin may be red, peel, or flake. There is minimal downtime after the treatment; however, it is important that clients take the necessary precautions to maximize their results.
- Avoid tanning or using tanning products
- Avoid any skincare products that have not been approved by your dermatologist/esthetician
- Avoid wearing makeup 24-48 hours after treatment
- Make sure your skin is hydrated
The great thing about micro-needling is that results of firmer and brighter skin are immediate. It is important to note that the final results won’t be visible until up to six weeks after treatment.
How Often Should Micro-needling Be Done?
There is no predetermined schedule that everyone should follow. It is always determined based on your goals; however, most professionals suggest having three to six treatments every four to six weeks. After those treatments, you will be advised to book maintenance treatments over six to 12 months.
